Cooking Jobs

The category of cooking jobs cover a wide range of positions; from head chef positions in different culinary fields to jobs that involve pre-cooking processes, such as food packaging and preparation. While some employers do not consider food handling positions as subcategories under cooking jobs, most still post food-related vacancies under the category of cooking jobs.

Cooking jobs are highly valued because holding such jobs entail having a natural knack and passion for the culinary arts, as well as the technical knowledge and skills needed to carry out the tasks involved in cooking jobs. While virtually anyone can enroll in a culinary school and learn the ins and outs of food preparation, it is usually the select few who have keen taste buds and passion for cooking that excel in the field.

Fields within cooking jobs

Contrary to what many people think, cooking jobs do not just involve head chef and sous chef positions. Cooking jobs are usually classified and sub-categorised according to the chef's expertise, which can range from preparing specialty cuisine (Italian, Greek, vegetarian, etc), baking, or extensive knowledge and experience on preparing certain types of food. These include soups and stews, seafood and meat dishes.

As mentioned, cooking jobs do not just involve those that deal with food preparation. There are cooking jobs that entail creating and mixing flavors, ensuring food security (checking if ingredients and foodstuffs are free of harmful substances) and food handling and packaging. The positions held by kitchen helpers, dishwashers, and kitchen equipment maintenance staff are also often counted as examples of cooking jobs.

Common qualifications for cooking jobs

Companies and employers differ in their requirements and qualifications for applicants who wish to hold cooking jobs. Most employers cite relevant background and experience in food technology and handling, while some place prime importance on having working experience in cooking jobs that involve actual food preparation and cooking. Aside from the degree and knowledge of food technology, employers also value applicants who possess extensive knowledge on food nutrition.

Basic mathematical aptitude is also a necessary requirement in holding cooking jobs because these involve dealing with food measurements, formulating budgets, and making sure that the ingredients bought stay within the set budget without compromising taste and quality.

Where you can find cooking jobs

The most obvious places to scour for cooking jobs are hotels, restaurants, private clubs and other establishments in the food service industry. Depending on your educational background and work experience, you can also choose to work in school cafeterias, hospitals, manufacturing plants, government agencies, etc.
